A celebrant can create a non-religious funeral that still follows a familiar structure while making it personal to the individual.

And let’s be honest, even the most traditional funeral can have a wonderfully unexpected moment.

Because people are people.

Someone might tell a slightly inappropriate story. They Have Wanted People to Cry?

Here’s a secret:

Funerals don’t have to be either sad or happy.

They can be both.

Grief and laughter aren’t enemies.

Someone can tell a story that has everyone reaching for a tissue and then, two minutes later, have everyone laughing because they remember the ridiculous thing Dad used to do with the television remote.

That isn’t disrespectful.

That’s life.

And sometimes laughter belongs at a funeral too.

Consider the People Who Will Be Attending

The person who has died is at the heart of the ceremony, but the people attending matter too.

Think about their relationships with the deceased and what they may need from the ceremony.

Would a large gathering be comforting?

Would a smaller, intimate ceremony feel more appropriate?

Would children want to participate?

Would certain family members find a religious ceremony meaningful?

Would others prefer something non-religious?

There may be different wishes within one family.

That’s where thoughtful planning becomes important.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1642 size-large" About Religion and Spirituality?

For some people, religious tradition is an essential part of saying goodbye.

For others, it isn’t.

And for many people, it’s somewhere in between.

A celebrant-led ceremony can provide space for spiritual beliefs, personal rituals, cultural traditions or religious elements where appropriate.

The important thing is that the ceremony reflects the person and their family rather than simply following a template.

What About Location?

A crematorium or place of worship may feel exactly right.

But perhaps your person was happiest outdoors.

Maybe they loved the coast.

Maybe their favourite place was the garden.

Maybe they spent every Saturday afternoon in the local pub.

Maybe their happiest memories involved a particular community or sporting club.

The location can become part of the story.

Of course, practical and legal considerations still matter, and some aspects of the funeral process need to happen in appropriate registered or authorised locations.

But your goodbye doesn’t necessarily have to end when the formal part of the funeral does.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1639 size-large" Can Have More Than One Moment of Goodbye

One option families sometimes find helpful is to separate the practical funeral arrangements from the larger gathering.

For example, there could be a simple cremation followed by a Celebration of Life at a later date.

This can give family and friends more time to organise themselves, travel and gather together.

It can also create space for a more personalised ceremony.

There isn’t a requirement for everyone to say goodbye in exactly the same way or at exactly the same time.

What If You’re Still Not Sure?

That’s okay.

There is no quiz at the end of this blog where you get your official “Funeral Type”.

Instead, try this:

Imagine your person walking into the room.

What would make them say:

“Yes. That’s me.”

Would they appreciate beautiful music?

A particular poem?

Their favourite football shirt?

Photos covering every available surface?

A woodland setting?

A religious blessing?

A room full of their favourite people?

A glass raised in their honour?

A quiet moment of reflection?

Or perhaps all of the above?

Start there. And I can highly recommend the fantastic book ‘Get Ahead of Being Dead’ by Evie King which explains why some of these decisions are important and includes checklists you can use to be able to make choices and leave for your people when the time comes.

A Personal Funeral Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

When you’re grieving, it’s very easy to get caught up in whether you’re making the “right” decisions.

But there isn’t a perfect funeral.

There is only a ceremony that reflects the person as honestly and lovingly as possible.

Sometimes that means carefully chosen words.

Sometimes it means silence.

Sometimes it means tears.

Sometimes it means laughter.

Sometimes it means someone saying, “They absolutely would have hated this!”

And sometimes that sentence tells you more about them than a beautifully polished eulogy ever could.

How a Celebrant Can Help

Planning a funeral while grieving can feel overwhelming.

As a celebrant, my role isn’t simply to stand at the front and read a script.

I spend time listening.

I want to hear about your person.

What did they love?

What made them laugh?

What were they proud of?

What drove everyone mad?

What stories do you tell again and again?

What made them unique?

From those conversations, I can help create a ceremony that tells their story in a way that feels authentic.

Whether that’s a traditional funeral, a Celebration of Life or something somewhere wonderfully in between.

And because no two people are the same, no two funerals should be the same either.

There Is No “Right” Funeral.
