How much does a celebrant cost? It is one of the first questions many couples, families and loved ones ask when they start planning a wedding, funeral, naming ceremony or celebration of life.
And quite rightly. Budgets matter. Weddings cost money, funerals need to be planned carefully and most of us would rather know what we’re spending before we start signing things.
But when you are choosing a celebrant, there is another question worth asking:
What am I actually getting for my money?
Because choosing a celebrant isn’t simply about paying someone to stand at the front of a room and read a script.
It is about finding someone you trust with one of the most important moments of your life.

So, how much does a celebrant cost?
There isn’t one universal celebrant price.
The cost of a celebrant in the UK can vary depending on the type of ceremony, the amount of preparation involved, the location, travel, experience of the celebrant and the level of personalisation you want.
A simple ceremony may require considerably less time and preparation than a completely bespoke wedding ceremony involving several meetings, detailed storytelling, personalised vows, rituals, music choices and extensive coordination with other suppliers.
And that is something I think is really important to understand when comparing celebrant costs.
You aren’t just paying for the hour or so that I am standing in front of your guests.
You are paying for everything that happens before, during and after the ceremony.

What does a celebrant actually do?
A professional celebrant can become one of the most important people in your ceremony planning team.
For a wedding, that can include:
- Getting to know you as a couple
- Discovering your story
- Helping you decide what you actually want from your ceremony
- Writing a completely personalised ceremony
- Creating or helping you write your vows
- Suggesting readings, rituals and symbolic ceremonies
- Helping you choose meaningful music
- Liaising with your venue and other suppliers
- Rehearsing with you if required
- Coordinating the ceremony on the day
- Keeping everything running smoothly
- Making sure your guests feel included
- Being the calm person in the room when everyone else is running around like headless chickens!
And, perhaps most importantly, being someone you know and trust when the big day arrives.
That has value.
I’m not just a celebrant. I’m an event planner too.
One of the things I bring to my work as Shelley Bell Celebrant is my experience as an event planner.
And that matters.
A ceremony doesn’t exist in a little bubble. It is part of a much bigger event.
There are venues, photographers, florists, musicians, caterers, venue coordinators, DJs, registrars, family members, children, pets, weather, timings, transport and approximately 47 things that nobody thought would happen until they suddenly do!
My event planning experience means I understand how all those moving parts fit together.
I know that if your photographer needs five minutes for a particular shot, your ceremony music needs to start at precisely the right moment, or your best person has disappeared because they are looking for the rings, somebody needs to stay calm and work out what happens next.
That somebody can be me.
My job isn’t simply to deliver words.
My job is to help create an experience.
The cheapest celebrant isn’t necessarily the best value
When searching for “how much does a celebrant cost?”, it can be tempting to compare prices.
Celebrant A charges £X.
Celebrant B charges £Y.
Celebrant C charges £Z.
Job done.
Except it isn’t quite that simple.
Imagine two celebrants offer apparently similar packages.
One has years of experience, excellent organisational skills, event planning experience, extensive ceremony knowledge and spends considerable time getting to know you.
The other offers a cheaper price but provides a much more basic service.
The difference isn’t necessarily obvious on a spreadsheet.
You feel it when something unexpected happens.
You feel it when you are nervous and need reassurance.
You feel it when you can’t decide between three different versions of your vows.
You feel it when a family dynamic needs navigating sensitively.
You feel it when your carefully planned outdoor ceremony is suddenly threatened by the British weather doing what the British weather does best.
And you definitely feel it when you stand up in front of everyone you love and realise that the person holding your ceremony genuinely understands you.

It isn’t always about the financial cost
This is something I feel very strongly about.
Of course, the financial cost of a celebrant matters.
Everyone has a budget and I would never suggest otherwise.
But cost and value aren’t always the same thing.
The real value of a celebrant can be found in the trust, skills, experience, preparation, creativity and relationship you build with them.
You are inviting someone into a very personal part of your life.
For a wedding, I might hear stories that very few other people know.
For a funeral or celebration of life, families trust me with memories, relationships, grief and sometimes incredibly difficult conversations.
For a naming ceremony, I am helping a family celebrate the arrival of someone who has already changed their world completely.
These aren’t transactions.
They are relationships.
And I think that matters enormously.

You should feel comfortable with your celebrant
Your celebrant should be someone you can talk to.
Someone you can say:
“Actually, that’s not really us.”
Someone you can tell:
“We don’t want anything traditional.”
Someone you can ask:
“Can we include our dog?”
Someone who won’t blink when you suggest a completely bonkers idea.
And equally, someone who will gently tell you if an idea might not work quite as well in reality!
Your ceremony should sound like you.
Not like a generic ceremony downloaded from the internet.
Not like someone else’s wedding.
Not like a script that has been dusted off and used 37 times already.

What makes a bespoke celebrant ceremony different?
A celebrant-led ceremony gives you the freedom to create something that reflects your personality, your relationships, your values and your sense of humour.
Perhaps you want a woodland wedding with a handfasting ceremony.
Perhaps you want to walk down the aisle to something completely unexpected.
Perhaps you want your children, friends or pets involved.
Perhaps you want a ceremony inspired by your favourite film.
Perhaps you want something beautifully simple.
Perhaps you want something completely bonkers.
Perhaps you don’t want an aisle at all.
Excellent. Let’s talk.
There are no prizes for having the most traditional wedding.
There are prizes for having a wedding that feels like yours.

What should you look for when choosing a celebrant?
Rather than asking only “How much does a celebrant cost?”, I recommend asking a few other questions too.
What experience do they have?
How long have they been a celebrant? How many ceremonies have they delivered? Do they have experience with your type of ceremony?
What is included in their fee?
Ask about meetings, ceremony writing, travel, rehearsals, coordination and support before the ceremony.
Do you actually like them?
This sounds obvious, but it is hugely important.
You are going to spend time with this person and trust them with something incredibly important.
You need to feel comfortable with them.
Do they listen?
A good celebrant shouldn’t simply tell you what they think your ceremony should look like.
They should listen to what you want.
Can they cope when things don’t go to plan?
Because something probably won’t.
That’s not a disaster.
That’s events.
The trick is having someone experienced enough to deal with it without you even noticing.
So, what are you really paying for?
When you book a celebrant, you’re paying for far more than the ceremony itself.
You’re paying for:
Time.
The meetings, conversations, emails, research, writing and preparation.
Experience.
Knowing what works, what doesn’t and how to handle the unexpected.
Creativity.
Creating something personal rather than pulling a ceremony from a filing cabinet.
Organisation.
Keeping all those little details moving in the right direction.
Event planning skills.
Understanding that your ceremony is one part of a much bigger celebration.
Calmness.
Because sometimes you need someone who can quietly say, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.”
Trust.
Knowing that someone understands what matters to you.
The relationship.
Because the best ceremonies aren’t created between a client and a supplier. They are created through collaboration.

The Shelley Bell Celebrant approach
I believe ceremonies should be personal, inclusive, relaxed, meaningful and a little bit fabulous.
I don’t believe you should have to squeeze yourselves into a traditional ceremony simply because that’s what has always been done.
I want to know your story.
What makes you laugh.
What makes you cry.
What you love.
What you don’t love.
Who matters to you.
And what you want your guests to remember when they go home.
Because when the confetti has been swept away, the flowers have wilted and the photographs have been filed away, what remains is how the day felt.
That’s the bit I care about.
The bottom line: how much does a celebrant cost?
So, how much does a celebrant cost?
The honest answer is: it depends on the celebrant, the ceremony and the level of service you need.
But perhaps a better question is:
“What value will my celebrant bring to my day?”
Look beyond the price tag.
Look at their experience.
Look at their skills.
Look at what is included.
Look at how much time they invest in you.
Look at their ability to organise and coordinate.
And most importantly, ask yourself:
Do I trust this person to look after me?
Because when you are standing in front of the people you love, experiencing one of the most important days of your life, you don’t just want somebody who knows how to read a ceremony.
You want somebody who knows you.
Someone who has listened.
Someone who has prepared.
Someone who understands what matters.
Someone who can take the pressure away.
Someone who can quietly sort the problem when Plan A has gone out of the window.
And someone who will stand beside you, metaphorical clipboard in hand, ready to make sure your ceremony is everything you hoped it would be.
That’s the value of a celebrant.
And that’s why, for me, it has never been just about the price.
