Can a Celebrant Legally Marry You in England?

Can a celebrant legally marry you in England? It’s one of the questions I’m asked more than any other, and it’s easy to understand why.

You may have seen beautiful celebrant-led weddings on social media. You’ve fallen in love with the idea of getting married in a woodland, on a family farm, at your favourite pub, or somewhere that means the world to you. Then someone tells you, “But isn’t it not legal?”

The answer is both simple and a little frustrating.

At the moment, a celebrant cannot legally marry you in England. But don’t stop reading there, because that isn’t the drawback many people think it is. In fact, thousands of couples deliberately choose a celebrant wedding every year because it gives them something far more valuable than a legal signature… it gives them a ceremony that actually feels like them.

Current Law: Can a Celebrant Legally Marry You?

Under the current legal wedding UK system, only certain people can legally solemnise a marriage in England.

These include:

  • Registrars conducting civil ceremonies
  • Authorised religious officiants in recognised places of worship
  • Certain authorised individuals within approved religious organisations

Independent celebrants, no matter how experienced or qualified, are not currently authorised to legally register a marriage in England or Wales.

This means your celebrant-led ceremony is symbolic rather than the legal act itself.

Many people are surprised to learn that the law governing weddings in England is based largely on where you marry rather than who conducts your ceremony. It’s a system that has been widely criticised for being outdated and restrictive.

So How Does the Legal Paperwork Work?

The good news?

It’s incredibly straightforward.

Most couples choose to complete the legal formalities at their local register office either before or after their celebrant ceremony.

This legal appointment is often called the “2+2 ceremony.”

It usually includes:

  • The couple
  • Two witnesses
  • A registrar
  • A very short legal declaration

The appointment generally takes around 10 to 20 minutes.

There’s no pressure to exchange personal vows, include readings, or invite all your family and friends unless you want to.

Once the paperwork is complete, you’re legally married.

Then, on your chosen wedding day, we create the ceremony you’ve always imagined.

Why Couples Still Choose a Celebrant

This is where the magic happens.

A registrar has legal responsibilities and time constraints. Their ceremony follows approved wording and must comply with strict regulations.

A celebrant ceremony is completely different.

As your celebrant, I get to know you properly.

Your ceremony can include:

  • Your own love story
  • Personal vows
  • Family traditions
  • Cultural elements
  • Handfasting
  • Ring warming
  • Sand ceremonies
  • Unity candles
  • Cocktails instead of champagne
  • Your dog delivering the rings
  • Live music
  • Laughter
  • Happy tears
  • Whatever feels authentic to you.

There are no scripts pulled from a folder.

Every ceremony I write is completely bespoke because no two couples are the same.

Whether you’re quirky, laid-back, neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, wonderfully unconventional or simply want something that doesn’t feel like everyone else’s wedding, your ceremony should celebrate who you really are.

The Best of Both Worlds

Many couples discover they actually prefer separating the legal paperwork from the celebration.

Think of it like this…

The legal appointment is simply administration.

Your celebrant ceremony is your wedding.

By separating the two, you remove restrictions on timing, venue and content.

You can marry on a beach at sunrise.

In your parents’ garden.

In a woodland clearing.

On a working farm.

At your favourite festival venue.

Or anywhere that holds meaning for you.

Instead of squeezing your personality into a legal framework, you create a ceremony around your lives, your values and your story.

Are the Laws Likely to Change?

Yes! Their have been recommendations made by the Law Commission to the Government to bring England and Wales in line with the rest of the country where Humanist Celebrants can legally conduct weddings – however in England and Wales they are also looking at including Independent Celebrants like me = YAY!!!

You can read the proposals hereĀ https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/tying-the-knot-reforming-weddings-law-in-england-and-wales

Is a Celebrant Wedding Worth It?

Absolutely.

When couples look back on their wedding day, they rarely remember signing paperwork.

They remember the moment they saw each other.

The laughter during the stories.

The tears during the vows.

The music.

The hugs.

The people they love gathered around them.

That’s what a celebrant ceremony creates.

A ceremony that’s unforgettable because it couldn’t belong to anyone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a celebrant legally marry you in England?

No. Independent celebrants cannot currently perform legally binding marriages in England or Wales.

Do I still need a registrar?

Yes. You’ll need to complete the legal marriage with a registrar, usually during a simple register office appointment.

Is a celebrant wedding recognised?

Your celebrant ceremony is a symbolic celebration of your marriage. Your legal marriage is recognised once you’ve completed the paperwork with the registrar.

Can we have our celebrant ceremony anywhere?

In many cases, yes. One of the biggest benefits of a celebrant ceremony is the flexibility to celebrate in a location that has personal meaning, subject to the landowner’s permission and any practical considerations.

Is having two ceremonies expensive?

Not necessarily. Many couples opt for a simple legal registration followed by the ceremony they truly want, allowing them to focus their budget on the experience they will remember forever.
